Philosophy
  • Students have different learning styles and educational needs and should be provided with varied approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Students have the right to learn in a safe, healthy and nurturing learning environment where they can reach their academic potential.
  • Educators should take a whole child and team approach to academic interventions to find the best way to address each child’s specific needs.
  • A student’s academic, social and emotional well-being are all crucial to his or her academic success.
  • Teachers, parents, counselors, therapists and other important stakeholders should all work together to support the student.
Academic Overview

The Canopy School provides a high-quality academic, executive functioning and social emotional curriculum to an economically and ethnically diverse student body for the purpose of providing positive educational, career and personal development outcomes to students with exceptional needs. Every student receives a specific support plan that addresses that student’s unique needs and abilities. Faculty align instruction with the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) College and Career Readiness (CCR) grade-level curricular standards and utilizes a variety of instructional techniques and student-specific learning accommodations to address students’ individual needs.

The Canopy School utilizes curriculum that aligns with the MDE CCR standards and includes language arts and reading, math, social studies, STEM, P.E., art, music and technology. Lower elementary reading and language arts curriculum is rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Teachers use a combination of traditional classroom instruction, experiential and kinesthetic learning, and small group and individual instruction to engage every student while also meeting each student’s unique needs.

Student Support Services
Available support services may include dyslexia therapy (up to 5 days/week), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioral support. These services benefit students with learning differences and other special needs, particularly in the areas of dyslexia, ADHD, autism, speech/language disorders and accompanying social-emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression and low self-confidence related to school and learning. Support service staff work in conjunction with classroom teachers to incorporate the appropriate academic, behavioral and emotional supports into every aspect of the learning environment for a whole-child approach to teaching and learning.
Workforce Development

The Canopy School offers 9-12th grade students a pre-employment program based in experiential learning to prepare students for a successful transition to the world of work. The transition program is run by a licensed special education teacher with over 30 years of teaching, administrative and leadership experience. In partnership with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS), Canopy utilizes an evidence-based pre-employment curriculum to ensure The Canopy School covers state learning standards.
